OVER THE NEXT two days, Liddy and Hunt flew first to Chicago, where they acquired walkie-talkies for the entry operation, and then to Los Angeles, using their aliases provided by the CIA. The operation went forward on the evening of Friday, September 3, right before Labor Day weekend. Following the plan they had presented to us, they went to Fieldingâs office and discovered that the door to the building was locked, despite preparations to make sure it was unlocked. To gain entry, they broke an external window that was shielded by trees, hoping to make it look as if there had been a burglary to steal drugs from a doctorâs office. During the search of Fieldingâs office, Barker, Diego, and Martinez spread papers and pills around, doing further damage to the office. They took Polaroid pictures of the damage they inflicted.
Their operation turned up no information or files relevant to Daniel Ellsberg.
Meanwhile, I was in my fiber-backed rocking chair in my apartment in Crystal City, Virginia, rocking back and forth and waiting for the call from Liddy. It was well past 1:00 A.M. EST when Liddy finally called to report that they had gotten in and out cleanly, but that no mother lode of information about Ellsberg was found. He promised a full report on his return.
While waiting for Liddyâs call, I had imagined getting a chilling report from the Beverly Hills Police Department informing me that they had five men under arrest who had given the police my name and telephone number. So I was as relieved as I had ever been in my life to know that they had made it out of the building without getting caught. However, I sensed thenâbut did not fully comprehendâthat something irrevocable had occurred.
